Ajijic is a small town but it's quite easy to get to. You'll want to fly into Guadalajara International Airport (GDL), which has direct flights to most major American airports. From there, it's a ~40 minute drive to Ajijic. Unfortunately there is no good public transit option, so we recommend taking a taxi or uber.
Airport taxis from GDL are safe and convenient, even if you don't speak Spanish. Here's what you do:
1. There is a taxi kiosk in the baggage claim area. This is where you pay, and there is a fixed price to get to Ajijic so that you don’t have to negotiate with your driver. Most recently it cost us 520 pesos, or about $30, and they accept credit card.
2. Take your ticket outside and hand it to a worker wearing a taxi vest, who will pair you with a cab and get you on your way. There may be a line but it moves quickly. We recommend having the name/address of your hotel on hand, in case the driver needs to look up directions.
There will be plenty of ubers operating around the airport, and from our experience they can be a bit more expensive than the taxi option. A couple pieces of advice:
We've had uber drivers in Mexico accept a ride and then text us right away, requesting we pay cash instead of in-app. That's an obvious, immediate cancellation.
Also, there seems to always be construction at GDL, and a couple times it's been tricky meeting up with our driver. We find the easiest pick-up spot is the flagpole turnaround, which bypasses the main pick-up area. (See below -- you'll exit the terminal and turn left.)
If you would prefer to arrange private transport ahead of time, your hotel/airbnb host should be able to connect you with a driver. There is a large network of for-hire drivers sustained by the constant flow of travelers between GDL and the Lake Chapala area. This will be the easiest but the most expensive option; we've been quoted 800-1,000 pesos one-way ($50-$60 USD), and you will need to pay cash.
